Qatar’s Lusail Stadium, the venue of the 2022 Football World Cup final, has been awarded a five-star rating under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) by the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD).
The venue has been given a 5-star rating for its design and a Class A star for its construction management. The stadium’s design is inspired by environment-friendly building practices, energy conservation, and construction waste recycling.
The unique roof and water management system are among the key highlights of the stadium’s design. The top has been constructed with a unique Polytetrafluoroethylene material, which helps keep the dust and hot air out while letting in just enough light on the pitch. The stadium also features state-of-the-art cooling mechanisms to control the temperature.
According to a statement released by FIFA, the design of this stadium is inspired by a famous Arabic lantern called Fanar and offers an interplay between light and shadows.
“By meeting the exacting GSAS standards, Lusail Stadium has set a new precedent in environmental excellence, guided by the FIFA World Cup Sustainability Strategy. We congratulate the SC for advancing climate action by successfully translating green building principles into impactful practices,” GORD’s Chairman Yousef Alhorr said.
“This is testament to the strong commitment to sustainability – which has been apparent from before ground was broken at Lusail and other venues,” he added.
The stadium hosts 80,000 people and will be officially unveiled on September 9 during a special match between the Saudi Pro League champions and Egyptian Premier League winners. The stadium, which will host ten games in the upcoming world cup, will get its first game when Argentina plays Saudi Arabia on November 22, 2022.
Engineer Ghanim Al Kuwari, deputy director general, Technical Services of the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy, said, “This recognition from GORD is an important part of our FIFA World Cup journey. Sustainability has been central to our plans as we are determined to develop venues that boost local communities here in Qatar long after the tournament.
